The 9th Annual CCM Scientific Meeting was held on November 7th and 8th, 2013 at the Washington Plaza Hotel, in Washington, DC (USA).

Nearly 60 attendees with complementary expertise and interests encompassing different research fields, including molecular, cellular and developmental biology, human genetics and genomics, and clinical research, yet completely focused on cavernous angioma, gathered together from the United States, Canada, Italy, Germany and the UK to share and discuss the latest research data and to develop new hypotheses and collaborations.

Indeed, the unique multi-disciplinary nature, the focused and comprehensive program, and the very friendly atmosphere of the CCM Scientific Meeting have been highly useful in driving innovative and collaborative research since its inception in 2005.

In particular, the 2013 edition offered significant breakthroughs into the molecular mechanisms underlying CCM pathogenesis, and fundamental insights into the development of novel therapeutic strategies.
Among these, the hypothesis that CCM lesions may result from a locally impaired endothelial cell defense against oxidative stress in microvascular districts of genetically predisposed subjects, originally proposed by Dr. Luca Goitre and Prof. Francesco Retta since the 2009 CCM Meeting in Santa Fe, NM, has continued to gain further support by novel experimental findings presented at the meeting and recently published in Free Radical Biology & Medicine (*), as well as by novel evidence from other researchers, including Prof. Angela Glading at the University of Rochester, and Dr. Christopher Gibson at the University of Utah (below, see the titles of their respective presentations).
